Ever compared your chapter to a pizza chain? No? Well, Laurel Peffer, a recruitment specialist for CAMPUSPEAK (recruitordie.com), did. When Domino’s Pizza recently launched their “Pizza Turnaround,” they did it in a bold way. They talked to their critics, admitted their product wasn’t the greatest and then reinvented it, using customer photos—not digitally enhanced shots. Peffer simply wondered: What if collegiate chapters did the same? Instead of jumping to the defensive, what if chapter leaders addressed their biggest critics’ concerns? “Parents would trust us with their children,” she wrote, “faculty would recommend us to leaders on campus [and] administration would seek us out to assist with campus programming.” Peffer, an Alpha Chi Omega, recommends focusing on reality during recruitment. If members are looking to improve their GPA/service hours/etc., tell potential members it’s a priority and that you’re looking for new members to help. Scoot over, George Banta On August 5, Delta Gamma lost one its biggest champions. And he wasn’t even a member. Dr. Paul Martin (along with his wife Dotty Garrett Martin, Eta-Akron, who passed away 16 years ago) always had a kind and generous spirit, but his support and even creation of Delta Gamma initiatives were remarkable. A proud member of Phi Delta Theta, Dr. Martin was the visionary and lead donor behind the Delta Gamma Foundation’s Lectureships in Values and Ethics series, now established on several college campuses throughout North America. The Lectureship legacy will live on, and the Martins will never be forgotten. Perhaps you noticed the group of Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity brothers known as “Fighting Gravity.” The Pikes, who finished third with their inventive blacklight performance, gave frequent shout-outs to Delta Gamma in the press. The act originated during Delta Rho chapter’s 2009 Anchor Splash at Virginia Tech. The men said they’d like to return and perform at the next Anchor Splash, saying “we feel we owe them.” Meanwhile, supermarket shelves have gotten inspirational lately. Through refresheverything.com, Pepsi-Cola launched an ambitious, socially responsible campaign for 2010. The company dedicated at least $20 million to fund popular charitable ideas— including several from your DG sisters. In stores, the beverage packaging reinforced the idea with a slogan many of you couldn’t miss: DO GOOD. “This is a fundamentally different program that required us to engage with our consumers in a different way,” said Seth Kaufman, a PepsiCo director for media strategy. Fundamentally different? Dgs have seen it before!
