Experience the work of Belgian contemporary artist Luc Tuymans in his fifi rst U.S. retrospective— and the most comprehensive presentation of his art to date. Considered one of the most signififi cant European painters of his generation, Tuymans (b. 1958) draws on both the historical traditions of Northern European painting and the more recent heritage of photography, cinema, and television.

He frequently explores issues of history and memory, as in works that address the lingering effffffff ects of World War II, the postcolonial situation in the Congo, and the global aftermath of 9/11.

Tuymans’s signature brushwork and palette offffffff er an innovative response to the great 20th-century schism between fifififi gurative representation and abstraction. He treats genres including still life, landscape, and portraiture with the scale and gravity once reserved for grand history painting and might even be said to have reinvented history painting for the present day. His approach to painting often suggests the montage of fifififi lmmaking, as one image links to another and additional meaning is conveyed by the pieces’ adjacency. This exhibition reunites paintings in several of the groupings initially set out by the artist and so conveys the original dialogue among the works. The presentation also demonstrates how Tuymans’s tendency to work in series and at an ever-larger scale aligns his work with current installation and site-specififififi c art.

Luc Tuymans fifi lls all the Wexner Center’s galleries and features key paintings from 1978 to the present. Jointly organized by the Wexner Center and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA), it premieres at the Wexner Center and will then be shown at SFMOMA, before traveling to Dallas, Chicago, and Brussels. Curators for the exhibition are Helen Molesworth, currently at the Harvard Art Museum (and formerly chief curator of exhibitions at the Wexner Center), and Madeleine Grynsztejn, who currently heads the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago (and was previously a curator at SFMOMA).
