Columbus Zoo Beastly Banner Summer 2009 : Page 1Director Letter from the There is nothing more memorable or exhilarating than having an up-close encounter with animals, especially wild animals. Jack Hanna arrived at the Columbus Zoo 31 years ago with his philosophy of providing close encounters with animals. It’s that philosophy which has built the reputation of the Columbus Zoo and given us our number one ranking! You may soon see a very clever and humorous commercial about our prestigious ranking. Let me honestly tell you, there is no official ranking of zoos. We really believe that all AZA accredited zoos serve their community exceptionally well and provide a huge economic impact. That said, we will obnoxiously promote being named number one! Back to animal encounters, this year we developed two new programs for you to enjoy. One is the new Animal Encounters Village which gives guests the opportunity to have close encounters with the education and promotion animals that accompany Jack on his speeches. You can visit this enchanting village in the Jungle Jack’s Landing area near the dry rides and picnic shelters located not far from the front gate. The new village also provides a great place for birthday parties or other celebrations! The second program, “Animals on Safari,” was developed by Joel Slaven, who grew up in nearby Berwick, Ohio. Joel’s been a longtime supporter of the Columbus Zoo and was even a docent in the 80s. He is one of the foremost animal trainers with shows featured at Busch Gardens and Sea World. His show features animals from local shelters, such as the Humane Society of Delaware, Capital Area Humane Society and Franklin County Animal Shelter (which is now directed by Don Winstel, retired head of the zoological programs at the Zoo). It also features some exotic animals and local wildlife, thanks to a partnership with the Ohio Wildlife Center. You can visit the Ohio Wildlife Center located off Dublin Road across the reservoir from the Zoo. No doubt you have heard of Beco, the baby elephant born March 27, but we have some equally precious babies that you don’t want to miss. They are the okapi, in the African Forest exhibit, and two siamangs, small apes in the Southeast Asia Islands exhibit. More are expected so check out our Web site www.columbuszoo.org to “know before you go.” The Safari Golf Club is not just a great golf course; it is also a great adventure into wildlife. Recently, a mink was seen on the 18th hole and a red tail hawk family above the 17th green. The conservation areas and frequent deer make this course a wildlife adventure for the whole family or your company outing. Zoombezi Bay, our new water park, is now open and rafts are free!
