President’s message Mortar Board members and friends, It is a great time to be a Mortar Board. Mortar Board Week was vigorously celebrated by our chapters in meaningful and fun ways, and now selection is underway around the country. I want to let all of our readers know about long-needed changes that Mortar Board is making. In preparation for a national conference that is more richly oriented toward leadership development, nearly all of the governance Susan Herndon Caples issues will be removed from the conference and placed in the hands of current chapter presidents, who will vote on these changes in advance of the conference. The National Council believes that what new chapter officers most want to know is how to lead their Mortar Board chapters. We are committed to giving them that information and moving governance into the hands of the more seasoned chapter presidents who have had a chance to serve their chapters. While voting for members of National Council will continue to take place at the conference, debate and voting for all other governance issues will be conducted virtually in a “special national conference.” The second change is one that has been harder for us to make. After years of being the only honor society or fraternal organization paying the travel costs for delegates to attend its national conference, Mortar Board is moving away from that model. While travel hardship stipends will be available this year for struggling chapters, every chapter will be asked to send a delegate at the chapter’s expense starting in 2013. Of course, Mortar Board nationally will continue to cover the lodging and meal costs for delegates while they are at the conference. Third, please be on the lookout for information about the launch of the Mortar Board Alumni Association. Mortar Board is a lifetime honor, and the MBAA will help us all be reminded about how important Mortar Board was—and is—in our lives. We are excited about these ways of making our Society better and look forward to Mortar Board members’ rising to the occasion in large and small ways. It is a great time to be a Mortar Board!
