President’s message Mortar Board members and friends, On March 28, I was both honored and pleased to preside over the installation of the 230th chapter of Mortar Board, the Epignosis chapter at Alcorn State University. Dr. Sally Steadman, National Foundation president and past National President and Brandon Caten, National Council student representative and president of the Azalea chapter at the University of South Alabama, assisted with the installation and initiation of the first class. You have known the close ties that come from fellowship in a common endeavor. In affiliating yourself with Mortar Board, you face a new vision and a wider field. Your vision need no longer be one of local bounds, your field no longer marked by the confines of your own collegiate institution. In your affiliation with Mortar Board, you now have the privilege of accepting a fellowship cemented and strengthened by a sympathy of aspiration and ideals which shall bind you to other students on other campuses. They share your ideals of striving toward all that is highest and noblest in college students. They have been chosen as you have been chosen – with the utmost care and respect for scholarship, leadership and service.” Almost a century later, Mortar Boards are linked with global connectivity, but this script still holds true! In addition to the first class of 18 initiates at Alcorn State, chapters are selecting and inducting new members all across the country. Our members are as diverse as our cultures, but we are all bound by the responsibilities and privileges of Mortar Board membership. I am so fortunate to be a part of an organization that affects the lives of so many! Special thanks to our National Office staff who continue to amaze me with their energy, professionalism, creativity and love of Mortar Board! I am so indebted to them for their dedication and efforts for the successful winter meeting in Atlanta, the second Special National Conference, numerous conference calls, the installation of the Epignosis chapter and especially for the support they provide daily to our chapters and alumni!
